About the Spanish Mastiff.

The Spanish Mastiff is a giant Iberian livestock guardian, walked along the medieval Mesta transhumance routes for centuries to protect 3 million sheep from wolves. NZ numbers are small but established, mainly with lifestyle block owners using the breed to guard stock from feral dogs and wild pigs.

Personality and behaviour

Calm, watchful, deeply bonded to whatever it considers family (which includes flock animals raised alongside it from puppyhood). Reserved to suspicious of strangers; the breed will choose to investigate or warn off a stranger without instruction. Slow-maturing, often two to three years before mental adulthood.

Care and exercise

45-60 minutes a day of patrol-style movement; this is not a high-drive breed and intense exercise is unnecessary. Diet is giant-breed appropriate, 600-900 g of quality food daily, split for bloat prevention. Coat care is twice-weekly brushing with daily attention through coat blow.
