Pyrenean Mastiff Dog Breed Information
Also known as: Mastín del Pirineo
A giant Spanish livestock guardian from the south side of the Pyrenees, distinct from the larger taller white Pyrenean Mountain Dog despite the regional overlap.
A highly affectionate, great with young children dog. On the practical side: low grooming demands. The trade-off is sheds plenty.
About the Pyrenean Mastiff.
The Pyrenean Mastiff is a Spanish-side giant livestock guardian, related but distinct from the better-known Pyrenean Mountain Dog (which developed on the French side). NZ numbers are small and the breed sits with lifestyle-block owners running working livestock-guardian programmes.
Personality and behaviour
Calm, watchful, slow-moving until something needs dealing with. Family-affectionate, intolerant of stranger approach without owner introduction, prone to night-barking on guard. Less intense than an Anatolian or Caucasian Shepherd, more colour-varied than the white Pyrenean Mountain Dog cousin.
Care and exercise
45-60 minutes a day at a walking pace. Diet is giant-breed appropriate (600-900 g of quality food daily, split). Coat blow is significant in spring and autumn. Suits NZ cool and cold climates particularly well; manage Northland summer with shade and water.

Spanish Mastiff
A giant Iberian livestock guardian, used historically to protect Spanish flocks from wolves on the Mesta migration routes. Rare in NZ; small numbers as livestock guardians on lifestyle blocks.

Maremma Sheepdog
The white Italian livestock guardian. A genuine NZ working dog used to protect sheep from feral dogs and pigs on Hawke's Bay, Marlborough and Otago farms, and famously deployed to guard little blue penguin colonies.
Anatolian Shepherd Dog
A 40 to 65 kg Turkish livestock guardian, bred for thousands of years on the Anatolian plateau to live with the flock and see off wolves and bears. In NZ a niche but growing pick on lifestyle blocks and farms running a Maremma-style guardian programme against feral predators.
