Small Munsterlander Dog Breed Information
Also known as: Kleiner Münsterländer
A medium versatile German HPR gundog, brown-and-white feathered coat, smaller and lighter than the Large Munsterlander despite the similar name.
A highly affectionate, highly trainable, great with young children dog. On the practical side: minimal drool.
About the Small Munsterlander.
The Small Munsterlander is a medium German hunt-point-retrieve gundog, brown-and-white with feathered ears and tail, smaller and slightly more biddable than the Large Munsterlander. NZ numbers are small and the breed sits with serious gundog handlers, particularly those who want one dog to cover upland gamebirds, duck shooting, and blood-tracking deer.
Personality and behaviour
Affectionate at home, reserved with strangers, quietly observant rather than vocal. The Small Munsterlander bonds tightly with the handler and follows from room to room. Energy levels are working-line by default, even from show-bred litters, so a household that cannot give 90 minutes of off-lead exercise a day will struggle.
Care and exercise
Daily exercise of 90 minutes including off-lead running and ideally a swim. Brush feathering twice a week. Clean ears weekly, particularly through duck season. The coat handles Otago and Southland cold-water work but a Northland summer needs early-morning and evening walks rather than midday outings. Diet is a steady 280-380 g of quality dry food split across two meals.
